Feng Zeng Lor Mee : My Kind of Comfort Food

This stall was featured on TV programme once and their special meatballs were mentioned in it. There is usually a queue during lunch time but it was none when i got there slightly after 2 pm. Their price range is in between $2.50 to $3.00 and it would be $4.00 if you want extra ingredients to be added. Their ingredients include shredded fish, braised meat, braised egg, meatballs and slices of fishcake.

This was my first time eating it and i do enjoyed what i have tasted. I would not list them as one of the must-try but i do like the different types of ingredients added particularly the meatballs that you would not likely get it elsewhere. The braised sauce is not as thick like most others and it was a bit diluted at the end.

Overall, it was an enjoyable bowl of Lor Mee that i would like to eat it again if i happen to be in this food centre.

58 Minced Meat Noodle : Cheap and Good

I am a big fan of Bak Chor Mee and i have been going around eating it from different stalls at different places, this is so particularly after the closure of Joo Heng Mushroom Minced Minced Pork Mee at Ang Mo Kio. I have tried many Bak Chor Mee including the famous ones but none has taken over the place of Joo Heng's as my favourite Bak Chor Mee yet. I was so crazy about them that i could eat 2 to 3 times per week. I was still a regular customer even after they raised their prices a few times. They closed down all of sudden, that stall was then converted to a drink stall managed by the Auntie. I have never see the Uncle since then. I guess something must have happened to him. That stall only lasted for a while before it closed down due to poor business.

Currently, my regular choice whenever i am craving for Bak Chor Mee is Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Pork Noodle at Serangoon Garden Food Centre. The taste of it somewhat reminded me of Joo Heng's.

I have heard about 58 Minced Meat Noodle. I am even curious enough to travel from Ang Mo Kio all the way to Taman Jurong just to satisfy my curiousity to know how good are they. I was there near 2 pm and there was no queue. I was told the queue is usually long during lunch time. Their Bak Chor Mee is available at $2.50, $3.00 and $3.50. Needless to say, i went for the larger bowl. As i was the only customer then, i gotten my order in just a couple of minutes. I requested to have extra chilli to go with my mee pok.

The first impression was the generous amount of ingredients like minced pork, pork liver and braised mushroom, bits of crispy pork lards were also added to enhance its flavor. To enjoy this bowl of noodles, you have to thoroughly mixed the chilli which is underneath that pile of noodles well. The level of spiciness was just right.

I reckon this is one of the better Bak Chor Mee after i had my first mouthful. The mee pok was nicely cooked to retain its springiness. I particularly enjoyed the few big pieces of pork liver, it was of the right thickness and perfectly cooked to a desired tenderness.

I would have be one of their regular customers if it is not of its location. I would also be more than willing to pay $3.50 for such a bowl of noodles, this is one of the cheaper and better Bak Chor Mee that i have ever eaten.

Simei Penang Laksa Speciality : One of the Best Penang Fried Kway Teow in Singapore

It is difficult to find really good Penang Fried Kway Teow in Singapore. There used to be a really good one that i ever tasted decades ago at Holland Drive by an elderly uncle but they closed it down and no where could be found. I have been hunting since then, i tried a few places but this has been the best so far. I would think the most authentic as compared to what i had in Penang. I have been coming back to this stall on a regular basis and still loving it.

You could order it at $3.50, $4 or $5. I usually go for the $5 portion with extra chilli added. Even at $3.50, the portion is quite substantial, it fried with ingredients like a handful of cockles, prawns, egg, cockles with fried pork lards added to enhance its flavor. The uncle fried it well to give the kway teow the desired texture and not overly oily too.

I enjoyed it so much and would not hesitate to suggest it when ask for a recommendation. Authenticity aside, this is the tastier so far.

Beside Penang Fried Kway Teow, their Penang Laksa is pretty good too. I tried it once and enjoyed it.

Rasa Sayang : An Old Favourite in Ang Mo Kio

Ang Mo Kio is a familiar place to me, i grew up here with many fond memories. Rasa Sayang is a well-known name for western foods in this part of Singapore. I used to be quite a fan when i was much younger but i stopped eating it after i moved away.

This time when i was here, i went for my usual favourite, their signature Chicken Chop for $6.00. It used to be much cheaper then for a slightly bigger portion as well. It still served it with a piece of garlic bread with a portion of baked beans, coleslaw, fries and an average sized chicken chop. The chicken chop tasted rather tender but somehow it was not as flavorful as i remember it to be.

Their Chicken Cutlet ($6.00) was another let down. It tasted slightly too dry and not as flavorful. I have definitely tasted much better ones elsewhere.

I grew up eating it and somehow, it just did not taste the same anymore. There is a significant drop in their standard and i could not quite understand why are there still many customers ordering from this stall? It might due to my expectations are getting higher as there are many better standard western food stalls around which offer better quality at a cheaper or the same price range.

Undeniably, this western food stall is an old favourite of many older residents in Ang Mo Kio.

Amigo at Changi Village : Chicken Chop Hor Fun

I used to stay at Loyang area which is about 5 minutes bus journey away from the Changi Village Food Centre. I came here quite often then and always for the Chicken Chop Hor Fun as well as the Coconut Drink. There are 2 stalls serving the Chicken Chop Hor Fun in the same row, the 2 stalls are directly facing each other and both are equally famous but Amigo is the one that is always have a constant queue. It is obvious that Amigo's is the popular choice. After moved away from Loyang, i did not get to come to this food centre as often as before. I was here quite a while back and i tried the Ipoh Hor Fun from Wing Kee Ipoh Hor Fun and ended up feeling disappointed. Their standard was not as good as it used to be and that was part of the reason that i decided to order from Amigo this time.

There was about 3 customers in the queue when i was there slightly after 2 pm on a Sunday. There was a younger man taking orders at the stall, assisting the older couple there. I was tempted to try their Signature Minced Meat Dry Mee Sua ($3.50) but decided to go with my usual favourite, the Chicken Chop Hor Fun with chilli added, this is their other signature item stated on their signboard. All of their noodle items are reasonably priced at just $3.50.

The wait was a short one, it was ready in just a bit. The young man placed it on the tray with a bowl of soup served in a disposable plastic bowl. I am expected to help myself with the red and green cut chilies.

I recognised that familiar taste when i had my first mouthful. The presentation might not be as appetising but it definitely still tasted as good and comforting. The kway teow was perfectly cooked to achieve the smooth texture and served in a pool of tasty braised sauce before topped it with a piece of perfectly fried chicken chop that was sliced into a few pieces. Though i never did ask for extra chili to be added but i could taste the distinct spiciness that actually enhanced its flavor.

This comforting taste was a part of my growing up memories and tasting again actually bought back some of those fond memories.

Bento n Rolls : A Taste of Passion

If you work near the Bendemeer Food Centre or happen to be there then you should go and grab a bento set or rice rolls from Francis & Lisa. Though simple taste but i could taste the amount of passion in it, definitely good efforts and deserved our supports.

Read about them in my article on MAKANSUTRA.
