Thai Fusion Wanton Mee in Ang Mo Kio

Yeo Tian Haw, the owner, is at the tender age of 21 years old, he started this stall with Zi Jian, his friend from childhood and both of them are of the same age. They have fallen in love with the Wanton Mee during their trip to Thailand and that prompted them to start this stall. There was a short queue when I was there on a Sunday around 1 pm. I decided to go with their signature Thai Wanton Noodle and I opted for the $4.50 portion, there is also the choices of $3.50 and $5.50 portion. I wanted to order their Fried Chicken Wing ($1.40 per piece) too but was told it is not ready yet. The Wanton Soup ($3 /$5 / $7) is also not available.

I helped myself with the dried chilli powder placed at the counter. When the noodle was ready, I was asked, "Do you want the chilli?". I pointed to the saucer on my tray and said, "I already took some." He said, "It is a different type of chilli." He scooped some onto another saucer and handed it to me.

Their Wanton Mee does not come with the usual char siew but slices of stir-fried garlic pork and with only fried wantons, the portion of noodles was substantial. It did not taste like the typical Thai style Wanton Mee, it is different from Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee at another part of Ang Mo Kio. It seemed to be quite dry but when looked closely, there was a pool of sauce underneath the noodles. I tossed it well and took a mouthful before adding in the dried chilli powder and mixed well, it actually tasted nicer with it. The handmade wantons are made daily, it consists of well-seasoned minced pork and it was deep-fried to the desired crispiness. The other chilli complemented the fried wanton rather well, a little spicy but quite addictive.

My dining companion said, "It reminded me of those noodles served by Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee. There is a certain similarity." He continued to say, "Those slices of pork were quite tasty too. Overall, it is quite nice."

I actually prefer the other Thai style Wanton Mee that I mentioned earlier.

Fatty Thai : Thai Wanton Mee

Edmund, Darryll and Wei Zhe, are the owners of this stall and all of them are 22 years old. They met during their school days and decided to start this stall after their national service in this coffee shop along Beach Road. Almost everything is handmade including their char siew which is done in-house based on a recipe that they obtained online.

I ordered Ba Mee Kiao Moo Dang, the Thai style wanton mee, the smallest portion is at $3, followed by $4 and $5. Another item on their menu is Khao Ka Moo at $5 and $7, rice is 0.50 cents per portion. When I was asked whether to go chili, I replied, "How spicy is it?". Edmund replied, "Very spicy. I will just add a little and leave it by the side."

Edmund was in-charge of cooking, assisted by Wei Zhe and Darryll was taking the orders. Though it is stated as "self-service", Darryll offered to serve it to our table.

The smallest portion that I ordered came with a good portion of noodles with slices of char siew and some green, garnished with dried chili flakes and preserved green chili.

Their wantons tasted a bit different, there was a distinct sourish taste and got my dining companion to wonder what it is. I suspected it might be caused by adding in lemongrass as part of the ingredients, which is common for making Thai style wantons.

There was a strong flavor of lard oil, other than the usual fish sauce and sugar as the base. It is different from the regular wanton mee as it is much drier with no sauce. The noodles were thinner and rather springy. The lards were not as crunchy and fragrant as expected though.

What left an impression was their friendly service. If I am going to compare this with the popular Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee, I would still think the latter fared a bit better.

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee : a cafe at Serangoon Shopping Centre

Mr Alan Ng, 63, the founder, started the first outlet of Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee in a coffee shop along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 in March 2013 followed by the second outlet at Jurong East in April 2016. Then, the third outlet opened on 24 April 2017, an air-conditioned cafe at Serangoon Shopping Centre. Apparently, this location is chosen for its practicality as the rental there is amongst the cheapest in the area. They set up their central kitchen here as they want to ensure the consistency of its food quality of all the outlets. This is also where they do their delivery service. And no, they are not related to the Sabx2 Wanton Noodles located at Soi Petchuri 19 in Bangkok.

I came across the article that I wrote about them on Makansutra in June 2014 near the entrance, amongst the others.

There are 4 choices for their signature wanton mee, there are the Regular ($4), Regular Extra ($5), Large ($5) and Jumbo ($6). I always go for the large size for a more substantial portion. There is even a dark sauce version for those that are not used to eating the Thai style wanton mee. There is also Pig Trotter Rice ($6) on their menu together with drink options like Iced Thai Milk Tea ($2.50), Iced Thai Coffee ($2.50) as well as Homemade Barley ($1.20 for hot / $1.80 for cold) and Coffee / Tea ($1.20).

Iced Thai Coffee was not available on the day that I visited so I went for the Iced Thai Milk Tea with a large portion of wanton mee. I was told to take a seat and it will be served to the table when is ready though there is a 'Self-Service' sign displayed at the counter.

Their egg noodles are different, it is light as well as springy and served with ingredients like the fried wanton, slices of char siew, waxed sausage and fried pork lard, tossed in a bit of oil and with a dash of fish sauce then added in the dried chilli flakes and preserved green chillies to complete it. It was also served with 2 pieces of wanton in the soup. The dried chilli flakes and preserved green chilli are available at the counter for self-service. The fried pork lards are not free-flow over here, it is available at $0.50 per saucer or $3.00 for a small plastic container.

It was generally nice though not quite as memorable as my very first bowl of their wanton mee that I had about 2 years ago.
