多记 驰名猪肠粉 芋头糕 : the popular breakfast choice

It was sold out when I was there for the first time, the last customer bought the last portion right before me at 10.30 am. It was also sold out when I was there for the second time at 10.05 am, the light of the signboard was already off. The third time, I managed to reach there at 9.30 am. I saw from afar that the light of signboard was on. I got excited as that was a good sign. I walked a little faster and there was just another customer in front. The third time is the charm and it is really third time lucky. This stall has been around since the 1970s.

I joined in and queue, waited patiently. When it was my turn to order, I said, "$2 Chee Cheong Fun and $2 Yam Cake." The lady replied, "The Yam Cake has finished." And, I said, "$3 Chee Cheong Fun then. Eating here." She asked, "With everything?" I smiled and nodded. She handed me the disposable plate with my Chee Cheong Fun and a pair of disposable chopsticks.

I could not wait and took a picture of the Chee Cheong Fun then sent it to my dining companion on Line. He replied, "Finally get to eat. Nice or not?" I replied, "Nice!" The rice flour rolls were cut into pieces using a scissor in a fast motion then served in a pool of sweet sauce then drizzled with chilli sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. They do not make those Chee Cheong Fun but got them from a supplier. Though factory-made, it was soft and did not taste like it. Such an old school taste is just so delightful and it left me feeling happy.

Handmade Chee Cheong Fun (Da Chang Jin)

I observed this stall from a far while eating my Char Siew & Sio Bak rice from another popular stall in this food centre at a table directly facing this stall. I decided to give it a go when done with my plate of rice with a bit of space in my stomach for something extra. Though there are other choices as filling but i decided to go with Char Siew for $3.50. It was done fresh right at the stall from preparing the rice flour sheet, steamed and rolled it then adding those bits of char siew. It was then served in a pool of light tasting soya sauce and topped with a handful of preserved radish and chilli by the side.

This was the first time that i came across preserved radish to serve with Chee Cheong Fun, this is definitely something new. I was excited at first but the excitement was short-lived, i did not quite like what i just tasted as i felt the saltiness of preserved radish did not have any particular effect in enhancing its overall taste. It was just not my kind of thing.

The texture of rice flour sheet was smooth with a desired softness and not too thick as well. The generous filling of char siew was rather moist and quite tasty. The chilli was alright with a nice hint of spiciness to give the dish a nice kick.

Overall, it was not too bad but not good enough to leave an impression.

Chee Cheong Fun

This is one of the newest stalls in this food centre.

I was greeted by the Auntie when she spotted me taking picture of the stall. We chatted and she recommended the Katong Laksa to me.

The Auntie insisted i took a picture of the poster featured the Katong Laksa. She even offered to give me a small bowl to try it. Interestingly, their Chee Cheong Fun came with various selection of fillings such as Roasted Chicken, Veggie & Egg, Seaweed Mushroom, Abalone, Otah, You Tiao and even Durian! The prices range from $2.80 to $5.00. Fried Rice is available right at this stall too.

I decided to go with the Hong Kong style Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun for $2.80. The Chee Cheong Fun is freshly handmade upon order.  The Auntie scooped a ladle of the rice flour batter and poured them onto the steamer. The rice sheet was formed almost instantly. She then laid the chopped char siew together with shredded lettuce  down then quickly folded it.

She divided it into 3 rolls then further cut it into smaller pieces. It was then placed on the plate before poured the soya sauce over it and sprinkled with bit of sesame seeds. I wanted her to place the chilli by the side but she suggested that it tasted nicer when applied on the Chee Cheong Fun directly. She then applied on just one of the three rolls of Chee Cheong Fun so i would get to taste the difference between chilli and non-chilli.

The presentation was pretty neat. I tried both the chilli and non-chilli pieces but prefer the chilli one much more. The sauce tasted quite different from other stalls.

Auntie mentioned that it tasted more like sweet & sour sauce with rather minimum level of spiciness.

It generally tasted nice to me though i could not distinctly taste the spiciness nor sourness or sweetness out of the sauce.

The filling of char siew was of quite a generous amount. The thin rice sheet was of a desirable softness with a delightful smoothness.

I could not quite appreciate the combination of char siew and shredded lettuce. If i ever come back, i would definitely request to leave the shredded lettuce out.

An interesting stall to look out for especially if you are game enough to try out the Durian Chee Cheong Fun there.
