Ghim Guan Fried Oyster : one of the nicest Fried Oyster

I did not expect to see this stall opened for lunch on a Sunday. It is usually closed as they only start in the evening. I have to try their Fried Oyster for the first time. "I heard there is a famous Fried Oyster here. Are you the one?" Auntie just smiled but did not acknowledge. There are 4 sizes for selection, the $4 for the smallest followed by the $6, $8 and then $10. I decided to go with the $8 portion. There are also Oyster Omelette ($6, $8, $10 and $12) and Fried Carrot Cake ($3, $4 and $5). Auntie asked for my table number. I pointed to the table right at the corner. She delivered it in just a while, with 2 pairs of chopsticks and 3 saucers of chilli.

My dining companion took a bite and he nodded, "This Fried Oyster is definitely one of the nicer ones that I have eaten. Though not as crispy as the Simon Road Fried Oyster but the egg is fried well to crispiness with a nice eggy taste." There is a good balance of egg and batter. The oysters tasted fresh and quite plump.

I went back to the stall to tell Auntie. I said, "The Fried Oyster is really good. The stall is usually closed when I was here. " Mr Ang, the owner, heard it. He said, "We only open in the evening but there are some orders today so we opened earlier. You can follow our Facebook and we will update there if there is a change in our off-day."

This is so good, definitely amongst one of the best in Singapore.

Hougang 6 Milestone : Simon Road Fried Oyster, Lost & Found

This famous fried oyster from Simon Road went missing about 2 weeks ago from the coffee shop at the corner of Simon Road. I started to receive messages asking the whereabouts of this stall. It was first mentioned by Tee Tony, the founder of Food Intelligence Network Singapore, a group on Facebook that someone looks like Ah Pang, the owner, was spotted at Upper Boon Keng Road Food Centre. Ian Low of The Silver Chef went over to confirm that he has indeed moved to that food centre.

I was there earlier for lunch. Ah Pang was standing outside the stall. I greeted him and said, "Many people have been asking about your stall after it went missing from the coffee shop at Simon Road." He smiled and said, "There is a change of ownership so have to move." He did not elaborate further though. He asked, "Fried Oyster ah?" I replied, "The $10 portion." The Fried Oyster ($5/$8/$10) and Fried Kway Teow ($3) are available from 11.30 pm to 5.00 pm as indicated on their signboard. The Fried Carrot Cake is available from 7.00 am to 11.00 am. He is still frying every plate by himself.

He saw me taking pictures of his stall. He said, "Thank you for telling your friends about my stall."

It is still the same familiar taste, the starch and egg mixture were nicely crisp at certain parts and the smoky flavor is still missing. It is still good but if you have tasted the one fried by his later father, it is still not quite on par yet.

My dining companion still enjoyed it nonetheless though he felt it did not taste as good as it used to be.

UPDATE: They have moved to Block 212 Hougang Street 21 SINGAPORE 530212 at the coffee shop next to the bowling alley.

Simon Road Fried Oyster : Lost & Found

This stall has been around for more than 30 years, they started in this coffee shop at the corner of Simon Road before moving to the coffee shop next to it when this coffee shop was undergoing renovation. Mr Lim Seng Hong that started this famous hawker stall has passed away during the Chinese New Year in 2017. Mr Lim Poh Pin, 46, his son, has taken over the stall and he restarted it at the same coffee shop where they first started. He did not get to cook much when his father was still around though he has been helping out since he was 18 years old. His father insisted on doing the cooking himself and leaving him to serve the customers.

Mr Lim looked up while cooking when I was there to order. He said, "Order here and paid first, it will be served to your table." I decided to go with the $8 portion, there are also the $6 and $10 available. He has also included Fried Kway Teow for $4 and $5 as well as Fried Carrot Cake for $3, $4 and $5 on the menu.

It tasted quite familiar, the eggs and starch were evenly crisp and the oysters were quite fresh but missing the smoky flavor. It was not bad, though not quite on par with the standard of his father yet, it is definitely getting there. Nonetheless, it is still amongst one of the better ones around.

When walking past him when leaving the coffee shop, I said, "好吃 ." He smiled.

Ah Chuan Fried Oyster Omelette at Toa Payoh

The queue was long on a Saturday during lunch with a relatively long waiting time to be expected. This stall is manned by an elderly couple, the auntie is taking the orders and collecting payments, uncle is doing the cooking. It was awarded a 6-chopsticks by Makansutra and that means this is one of "die-die-must-try" stalls. This is one of the most talked about Fried Oyster Omelette stalls and is amongst one of those popular recommendations.

Fried Oyster Omelette is the only dish serves at $4, $5 and $8. I decided to go with $8 to share with my dining companion. Though not a huge portion, it served with a generous amount of egg and quite a few pieces of plump oysters, garnished with coriander and served along with chilli in the saucer.

I was not disappointed as it met my expectations though not exceedingly but this is a good plate of Fried Oyster Omelette nonetheless.
