MOVIE REVIEW: Before Midnight.

Thanks to OMY.SG for the invitation to the preview of Before Midnight held at the Preview Theatre at Shaw Centre.

'Before Midnight' is the third firm in Richard Linklater's 'Before' trilology. He started with Before Sunrise in 1995 and Before Sunset in 2004.

How many of us remember that Jesse and Celine first met two decades ago on that train bound for Vienna in Before Sunrise

I am a big fan of the series. I expected the movie to be rather similar to the earlier 2 series but it turned out to be quite different but i am falling in love with Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy all over again.

In Before Sunrise (1995), Jesse met and woo Celine during that meeting on the train and spent a magical day together in Vienna awaiting the sunrise. Both went the separate way after the sun risen. In Before Sunset, both of them came together again after 9 long years,  they met and they walked through the streets and they talked.

I remember this well.

Jesse: 'What do you think were the chances of us ever meeting again?'
Celine: 'After that December, I'd say almost zero. But we're not real anyway, right? we're just, uh, characters in that old lady's dream. She's on her deathbed, fantasizing about her youth. So of course we had to meet again.'

The ending of Before Sunset.

Celine: 'Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.'
Jesse: 'I know'.

Things happened since then.

In 2013, another 9 years after the last film, Before Midnight.

As anticipated, Before Midnight is one of the greatest movies of 2013.

The feel is about the same like before though unless the earlier 2 films focused more on idolizing the love. The third is pretty down-to-earth, when the focus shifted from the fairy tale type of love to the reality. The love is definitely not quite the same after being together for 9 years. How much love is left after all these years? Though they are not officially married but they have a pair of adorable twin daughters. It is no longer about the two of them but a family to take care, and not forgetting the son from the ex-wife.

The movie started when Jesse is sending the boy off to be with ex-wife in US. Jesse has gone through a bitter divorce to be with Celine. He is guilty of not being there to be a part of the growing up of his boy. The departing of the boy somewhat awaken his bit of fatherly love. This prompted Jesse to consider moving his current family to be with the boy in US.

The main focus of the movie is the domesticated love between Jesse and Celine particularly the deep frustration of Celine. She felt the amount of sacrifices made to the extent she is forced to give up her interests in writing and singing songs as well as the little involvement of her partner, leaving her feeling kind of helpless during certain phases of the life. She maxed out on the level of her endurance till she felt there is no more love for her man. The 'I don't love you anymore' is a powerful word before she walked out of that door.

There is no such thing as perfect partner. Though Jesse and Celine are intellectually comparable but not quite a perfect match in terms of the different outlook on life.

Celine asked Jesse, what would be the one thing he wanted to change in her. Jesse simply wanted her to stop changing him. No one is perfect so just find the right person. That person that you can love with all your heart. That person you will feel comfortable with. That person that accepts the complete you.

Jesse told Celine, he accepted her as a whole package, the brilliance and also the craziness.

A happy ending is expected so little surprises when Jesse decided to reconcile. The little love left in the hearts of both decided to give in and to try harder to stay together.

Life is hard but having a partner to share it somewhat sweeten it.

To achieve true happiness is a common goal in life. Many a time, the biggest factor preventing it in achieving it, simply and sadly, ourselves. Somehow, we should stop to further complicate it and just live it well. It would so much simpler and enjoyable that way.

[MOVIE PREVIEW] TOWER HEIST

A special thanks to omy blog club for the invitation to preview TOWER HEIST at The Cathay on
1 November 2011 (Tuesday).

Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead an all-star cast in Tower Heist, a comedy caper about working stiffs who seek revenge on the Wall Street swindler who stiffed them.  After the workers at a luxury Central Park condominium discover the penthouse billionaire has stolen their retirement, they plot the ultimate revenge: a heist to reclaim what he took from them.

Queens native Josh Kovacs (Stiller) has managed one of the most luxurious and well-secured residences in New York City for more than a decade.  Under his watchful eye, nothing goes undetected.  In the swankiest unit atop Josh’s building, Wall Street titan Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) is under house arrest after being caught stealing two billion from his investors.  The hardest hit among those he defrauded?  The tower staffers whose pensions he was entrusted to manage.

With only days before Arthur gets away with the perfect crime, Josh’s crew turns to petty crook Slide (Murphy) to plan the nearly impossible…to steal what they are sure is hidden in Arthur’s guarded condo.  Though amateurs, these rookie thieves know the building better than anyone.  Turns out they’ve been casing the place for years, they just didn’t know it.

Josh Kovaks - Ben Stiller
Slide - Eddie Murphy
Charlie - Casey Affleck
Arthur Shaw - Alan Alda
Mr. Fitzhugh - Matthew Broderick
Lester - Stephen McKinley Henderson
Mr. Simon - Judd Hirsh
Special Agent Claire Denham - Tea Leoni
Enrique Dev'Reaux - Michael Pena
Odessa - Gabourey Sidibe
Miss Iovenko - Nina Arianda

It is an old-fashioned comedy caper about few of the hardworking individuals after realising the Wall Street titan Arthur Shaw staying at the Tower's Penthouse has stolen their pension fund hence plotted an ultimate revenge plan to steal back the millions supposedly theirs.
Ben Stiller plays Josh Kovacs, the building manager that turned mastermind after being sacked by the management for smashing the 1963 Farrari. He decided to gather few of his co-workers to assemble a team with the help of a a petty crook acted by Eddie Murphy.  The team managed to bring Shaw to justice with the help of the FBI agent (Tea Leoni).

There's amazing chemistry working between Ben Stiller and the rest that helped to bring forth some of the funniest exchanges and anchored the entire movie somewhat.
Eddie Murphy played the criminal that recruited to help in the heist but later, blinded by the greed of wanting those cash all by himself. He attempted to betray the team but unsuccessful. He forced to rejoin the team and to help successfully carried out their revenge plan.
It's rather entertaining though i have expected it to be better. Just come, enjoy the movie and have a good laugh.
Apparently, she is my favorite character. She is a safe-cracking expert named Odessa, played by Gabourey Sidibe. Gutsy, dominative and smart in a cute way.

PREVIEW: RIO

Selected by Twentieth Century Fox Singapore to preview the movie on 4 April 2011 (Monday) at The Cathay.

Director: Carlos Saldana
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Jessie Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement
Rating: PG
Time: 96 minutes

From the markers of 'Ice Age' promises plenty. But Rio is a little disappointing, it has not got the charm of the Ice Age, but still, it is a witty one.

It has gotten some good voice casting like Jesse Eisenberg as Blu, Anne Hathaway as Jewel and Jemaine Clement as Nigel. Blu is a rare parrot, in fact there is only one more of his species in the other part of the world. Blu is taken to Brazil to meet the other rare pilot, but he ended up being kidnapped, and the adventure started from there.

PREVIEW: Morning Glory

A special thanks to omy blog club for the invitation to preview Morning Glory at The Cathay on 21 March 2011 (Monday) at 7pm.
Paramount Pictures Presents

Executive Producers Sherryl Clark . Guy Riedel
  • Produced by J. J. Abrams . Bryan Burk
  • Written by Aline Brosh McKenna
Directed by Roger Michell

  • Starring: Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Patrick Wilson, Jeff Goldblum
  • Synopsis: From director Roger Michell ("Notting Hill," "Venus"), producer J.J. Abrams ("Felicity," "Alias," "Lost," "Star Trek"), and writer Aline Brosh McKenna ("The Devil Wears Prada," "27 Dresses"), comes "Morning Glory," a new romantic comedy set in the hilarious and dysfunctional world of morning television.  Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton star along with Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldblum.

  • When hard-working TV producer Becky Fuller (McAdams) is fired from a local news program, her career begins to look as bleak as her hapless love life. Stumbling into a job at "Daybreak" (the last-place national morning news show), Becky decides to revitalize the show by bringing on legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Ford).  Unfortunately, Pomeroy refuses to cover morning show staples like celebrity gossip, weather, fashion and crafts – let alone work with his new co-host, Colleen Peck (Keaton), a former beauty queen and longtime morning show personality who is more than happy covering morning "news." As Mike and Colleen clash, first behind the scenes and then on the air, Becky's blossoming love affair with fellow producer, Adam Bennett (Wilson) begins to unravel –and soon Becky is struggling to save her relationship, her reputation, her job and ultimately, the show itself.
The movie was directed by Roger Michell, the same director for Notting Hill and written by Aline Brosh McKenna that wrote 'The Devil Wears Prada'. There is a certain similarity spotted between both stories.

A very good movie, one of the better so far for this year. I am a big fan of Indiana Jones thus i am a big fan of Harrison Ford, and he is the main reason gotten me wanting to watch this movie. The very different Harrison Ford from Indiana Jones can be quite a surprise, but if you do watch him on various talk shows then the level of surprising is not quite. Somehow, it is a transformation for Harrison Ford from Indiana Jones to Mike Pomeroy.

The on screen chemistry between Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams and Diane is truly magical. Rachel McAdams definitely did a great job played Becky Fuller but i feel, the anchor of the movie is still Harrison Ford, and if without him, the effect might not be quite the same. McAdams gives the role plenty of pluck but she does not seemed to have the natural comic charms the role required.

And, Diane Keaton suited the character of Colleen Peck, she brought the charm of a TV host is expect to have with her charming smile.
One of the scenes that i like, it got me to shed a little tear but i felt the happiness in my heart.
This movie is about how people do their jobs, live their lives and how they love their works which i can really empathized. The movie has a certain charm and a light-footed smartness which i appreciate.

The script and direction are a little predictable but it is still have its appealing factors.  The ending is a joyful one that brought a smile to my face.

And now, watch the trailer. Enjoy!
“Morning Glory” is a Paramount Pictures release

One of the main courses was Truffle Linguine Napoletana.

Another one was Oven Baked Rosemary Crusted Chicken.

After the appetiser and main courses, we were then ushered into the theatre to watch a chinese movie by the title of 'What Women Want' featured Andy Lau and Gong Li.

Our desserts, Mango Tango and Chocolate Tiramisu were served with another round of cocktail and mocktail to us, in the theatre.
