[MALAYSIA] Selera Johore Food Centre

This food centre is just a stone's throw away from the Larkin Bus Terminal.

Mee Rebus Special (RM 6.00). The special version served with fried mushroom and fried prawn together with a handful of crispy bits. This is likely one of the nicest Mee Rebus that i have eaten in Johor Bahru. It is almost a must eat whenever i am there.

Kacang Pool. I felt the standard has dropped quite a bit since my last visit about a year ago. The toast was not evenly buttered thus it tasted a bit plain. It has been lightly toasted to give it a slight crisp. The set served with a bowl of dip that made of grounded peanuts and bits of onions. The taste is rather close to the Satay dip but slightly sweeter. It served with a nicely done sunny side up egg.

[MALAYSIA] What to eat at Larkin Bus Terminal?

There is a food centre above the Larkin Bus Terminal. It is located at level 3 and easily accessed by escalators. It is separated into the Malay section and the Chinese section. There is a wide selection of foods at both sections.

The fish soup might be a good choice but the soup was a little too bland to my liking and i think the fish did not taste too fresh. The texture was slightly mushy and not as firm. A total of RM 8.50 was paid for the fish soup and the bowl of rice.

I enjoyed the prawn mee quite a bit. The stall is manned by a friendly Uncle. I went ahead to order the big portion for RM 4.50. He asked for my table number but i could not quite understand as he phased it in his malaysian style mandarin. He was patient enough to ask it again in a more understandable manner. I'd think the portion was substantial for the amount paid. The soup has got a distinctive sweetness with a rather mild taste of prawn.

The texture of the prawn was slightly tough but it did not have any strange taste. It served along with slices of fish cake and lean meat.

Wanton Noodle is priced cheaply at RM 4.00. The portion is good for such a price. The texture of the noodle has got the desired springiness with just the right chewiness. The thinly sliced char siew tasted a little dry. The wantons tasted pretty normal.

Curry Kway Teow served with quite a few pieces of tau pok with cockles for RM 4.50. The curry taste somewhat reminded me of those Maggie brand instant curry noodle. It tasted rather similar. The cockles were a bit too raw to my liking. It tasted rather decent overall.

The friendly auntie approached our table and asked for the drink order. She recommended the warm barley but decided to have a cup of hot coffee instead. I'd think the balance of sweetness and bitterness was pretty good. Such a cup of coffee is RM 0.90.

The pancake at this stall is value for money. It came in 4 pieces for RM 2.50. The texture of pancake was soft and moist with generous filling of a mixture of grounded peanuts and sugar. The sugar added was rather well-balanced. An ideal choice for snack.

Fried spring roll. It came in 5 pieces for RM 2.00. It was freshly fried so it tasted nicely crispy though slightly oily.

Prawn Fritter & Ngor Hiang.

This seems to be a popular stall though not so much for their dry and soup version of prawn noodle but more for their prawn fritter and ngor hiang. I decided to order to go with my noodle. I ordered only 3 items: the prawn fritter, the ngor hiang and the yam roll.

I given my table number and proceeded to wait there. It was served in about 10 minutes. And, i paid $3.90 for all the items. I'd say a little expensive than expected. It was served along with a bowl of chilli sauce in a small disposable bowl.

All the items have been deep fried again to give it the desired crispiness.

I tried the ngor hiang first. It tasted quite average though it did has a likable crispiness with a rather dominating taste of the five spices. I did not quite like it as i have tried much  better ones out there.

I went for the fried prawn fritter next. Though it tasted much better than the ngor hiang but i was not amazed by its taste. It tasted rather average as compared to some i had before. I had it with that bowl of the chilli sauce but it did not has any effect in enhancing its taste further. The chilli sauce did not have  a distinctive spiciness nor sweetness.

The last item was the yam roll. Apparently it did not fare any better than the earlier items. Though it has a bit of crispiness but the taste did not stand out at all. I could not taste any distinctive yam taste but mostly the taste of the flour.

This is not the best so i will be happy to skip it. I might try the prawn noodle though.

Lotus Root with Pork Ribs Soup.

Wanting a simple dinner and i thought i should check this stall out for the first time. Most of the customers were placing their orders for the signature claypot rice. They ordered and left their table number then proceeded to wait at their tables. It indicated that the claypot rice is cooked only upon order. A certain amount of waiting time is anticipated then. I decided to go ahead to order their steamed soup to have it along with rice. Steamed soup  and rice are expected to be of self-service though.

I wanted their Lotus Root with Pork Ribs Soup for $3 and a bowl of rice for 0.50 cents.

A good portion of piping hot Lotus Root with Pork Ribs Soup was served in a metal container. The taste of soup was good though not fantastic. The time during the cooking process might have been compromised as the soup did not have the intensified taste of lotus root and peanuts.

There was a good amount of slices of lotus root and quite a few pieces of meaty pork ribs in the soup.

The thickly sliced lotus roots were not overly mushy but firm in texture. The peanuts were not too soft with a certain bit of remaining crunchiness. I do wish to have more peanuts in the soup though. The texture of pork ribs was unexpectedly soft. It was done well to give it the desired softness with a minimum level of chewiness. It was so soft that it actually pulled away from the bone effortlessly. The bowl of rice that served along with the steamed soup has got the likable texture of fluffiness and moistness.

It was an enjoyable dinner nonetheless.
