5 Little Bears : Authentic Taiwanese Street Foods
We were there for a quick dinner before the movie premiere of 'Non-Stop' at Shaw Lido at about 6 pm. The place was rather packed then but there were quite a few of empty tables available. We proceed to the first counter to place our orders, paid up and given a number tag. I was told to look out for the number on the LED display panel for collection.
We decided on Set A and Set B. Set A consists of the famous Taichung Braised Pork Rice (台中滷肉饭) and a drink for $5.90 and Set B consists of X Large Chicken Chop (超大鸡排), Sour Plum Sweet Potato (甘梅薯條) and a drink for $8.80. We wanted a Wintermelon Tea (古早味东瓜茶) and Coffee Black Tea (咖啡红茶) to serve along with the sets.
The number was flashed in a few minutes to pick up the Braised Pork Rice together with the 2 drinks. The Braised Pork Rice was served in quite a big bowl topped with a generous portion of braised pork, salted vegetable, stalks of vegetable and half of a braised egg. Such a bowl of Braised Pork Rice is reasonably priced at $4.80 by itself.
The braised meat though slightly fatty but it did not taste too oily with just the right texture at desired softness. The perfect way to enjoy it is to eat it with the salted vegetable in every mouthful. Though it might not be as nice as the one by Shin Yeh but this is amongst one of the nicest that i ever eaten in Singapore. I do hope such a standard is to be maintained.
The X Large Chicken Chop and the Sour Plum Sweet Potato were served together to our table by a friendly Auntie.
The chicken chop was nicely deep-fried to give it the delightful crispiness and not overly greasy as well. Though it is likely to pre-fried and re-do it again just before served but it has done well to not compromising its texture. It was served with a pile of chilli powder aside to complement and further enhance the taste of the chicken chop. The level of spiciness was just right for me but was a bit too spicy for my dinner companion.
I would think the Sour Plum Sweet Potato was a good choice too. The chunky pieces of sweet potato were coated lightly with the batter and deep-fried well to give it the crispiness then placed it on the pile of sour plum powder to serve. The sweetness of the sweet potato went along perfectly with the sour plum powder.
The overall experience was quite a pleasant surprise. I am already looking forward to coming back to try the others on their menu.

Song Kee Fishball Noodle
I have heard of this particular fishball noodle and have been wanting to try it for a while. Their operating hours make it to be quite a challenge though as they operate from 6.30 pm to 3.00 am or sold out. Their off-day is on every Wednesday. They are located along Upper Serangoon Road and within the walking distance from the Serangoon MRT station, not too far from NEX.
I was just happened to be at NEX to catch a movie and decided to walk about 5 minutes to here for supper after the movie. It was about 9.30 pm then, though no queue but almost 80% of their tables were occupied.
I went to the counter right in front and ordered from a friendly Auntie. Their system is to order first and pay upon served. A number tag was given to be placed on the table. The waiting time was longer than expected. We waited for slightly longer than 15 minutes before gotten our bowls of noodle.
The portion of noodle was just right served along with 3 pieces of fishball, a piece of tau pok together with a fish dumpling.
The noodle was cooked well to give it the desired springiness and softness.
When tossed it, a bowl of tasty noodle awaits. Though i have requested for an extra amount of chilli to be added but the level of spiciness was just right though it was a little oily at the base.
This is definitely a good choice for supper but too bad, i do not stay in the vicinity.

Lau Wang Claypot Delights : That Homely Taste.
We decided to come by here for a quick dinner before heading to NEX for movie. We were there at about 5.30 pm and the shop was rather empty then. I have tried the Sesame Oil Chicken and the Ginger & Spring Onion Liver and Kidney before and enjoyed it then. I ordered exactly the same items with 2 bowls of rice.
The Auntie spotted me with the menu and she came by quickly to take the orders. It was served by the same Auntie in about 10 minutes. The portion was pretty generous for $4.50. It was served with a handful of chicken pieces in a good amount of braised sauce.
The Sesame Oil Chicken tasted much better than our first visit. It has got a good balance of sesame oil and ginger taste and it tasted good when eaten with the plain rice.
I requested for chilli to be added with the Ginger & Spring Onion Liver and Kidney for $4.50. Apparently, it did not taste as nice as the first visit. The kidney has got a strange taste probably due to not cleaning it thoroughly and properly. Those slices of liver were cooked just right to give it the desired texture.

Babi Goeling : A piece of Bali in Singapore.
A all-in set consists of Balinese roast pork, fried pork skin, pork satay, pork sausages with vegetable toppings for $8.80. It's probably worth the try though i could not quite confirm its authenticity as i have not try the real thing in Bali for comparison.
