Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh at Macpherson

It was a rainy afternoon when we were there for a late lunch. The shop is located along the Macpherson Road just a stone's throw away from Tai Seng MRT Station.

There were a few tables occupied then. The waiting staff came over quickly the moment we seated to take our order. I was eager to try their Signature Bak Kut Teh. Single serving is available at $6.90 and a larger portion is at $13.80. I decided to have the single serving together with Ginger Sesame Chicken at $5.90. I ordered the Salted Vegetable at $2.00 and Honey Lemon Drink at $2.00 to go along. Plain Rice is available at 0.60 cents for a bowl.

The Dried Bak Kut Teh served first and followed by the Salted Vegetable.

The presentation of the Dried Bak Kut Teh was rather appetising. Few meaty pieces of pork ribs were cooked with the braised sauce and allowing the sauce to reduce through the cooking process then added in the dried chilli and dried cuttlefish to enhance the taste further.

The meat of the pork ribs was cooked well to give it the desired texture. It was tender and nicely soft with just the right level of chewiness.

It goes perfectly well with the fluffy white rice for a satisfactory meal. Their Dried Bak Kut Teh is probably the best that i eaten in Singapore.

The Salted Vegetable is another simple dish done well. A good portion of it was stir-fried with garlic and dried chilli to give it the flavor. It complemented the meat dishes pretty nicely.

The Ginger Sesame Chicken served last. I was told that it was in the midst of cooking it when they served the Dried Bak Kut Teh. It took a little longer to serve though. I could understand why the preparation time is longer when i had my first bite. I guess they prepared the dish from start rather than pre-cooking it and re-heating it upon order.

It tasted nice but it would be nicer if it is cooked a little longer to give it a softer texture. The braised sauce was tasty with a nice hint of ginger and sesame taste. The braised sauce alone is good to have another bowl of rice.

They must have forgotten the Honey Lemon Drink as i still did not get it when they served the Ginger Sesame Chicken. I have to remind the waiting staff and they served it right away.

The total bill is $18.60 minus the $10 Voucher given by Where to Eat Singapore is $8.60. I chatted with the waiting staff a little. I asked whether Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh is related to Xin Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh. I mentioned the Dried Bak But Teh is much nicer as compared to that one by the latter. I was told they are not related but their boss has founded Xin Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh but left the partners to start the current one.
